AWS provides public IP address blocks assigned to the Tokyo region (ap-northeast-1), which are assigned from APNIC to Amazon and ideally considered native Japanese IPs. Therefore, from a technology allocation perspective, AWS does have native Japanese IP.
When you create EC2 in the Tokyo region and apply for an Elastic IP or assign an external IP address, AWS will assign addresses from the IP pool in the Tokyo area. Such addresses are often labeled as Japan (JP) in many IP databases. However, IP geolocation can also be affected by database updates, routing paths, or reverse DNS settings.
Even if the IP comes from the Tokyo area, some ISPs or geographic databases may still display information from different locations, especially for newly assigned IPs or cross-border relay scenarios. To verify actual geographic performance, it is best to use multiple geographic databases and route tracking for confirmation.
GCP (Asia-northeast1), Azure (Japan East/West), and other cloud providers all have local regions in Japan, and these providers also allocate public IPs from regional IP pools. The main differences lie in IP pool size, network peering, CDN and edge node coverage, and BGP policies.

1) IP Pool and Availability: AWS typically has abundant and stable IP resources, but due to differences in operational scale and IP inventory management, the number of available IPs may vary in the short term among vendors. 2) Routing and latency: Different vendors and major Japanese carriers (NTT, KDDI, SoftBank, etc.) have different interconnection quality, which can affect latency and packet loss to domestic users. 3) Geolocation consistency: Some vendors' IPs are more quickly identified as Japan by local geographic databases, which affects advertising and access restrictions.
When selecting a device, you should conduct real traffic or ping/traceroute tests, and evaluate the provider's network performance based on the ISP distribution of target users, rather than just looking at the literal meaning of "whether the IP is native to Japan."
To confirm whether an IP is a native Japanese IP, it's not just about the allocated location; multiple methods are needed: IP WHOIS/ARIN/APNIC lookup, third-party geolocation services (such as MaxMind, IP2Location) comparison, traceroute from local Japanese carriers or terminals, and testing access through real devices.
1) Choose to create resources in the Tokyo area and apply for elastic IPs or static external IPs; 2) Use local dedicated lines provided by cloud providers (Direct Connect, ExpressRoute, Cloud Interconnect, etc.) to stabilize the route; 3) For critical business operations, Japanese nodes that can use multiple clouds can be redundant or load balancing, avoiding the impact of a single IP geographic bias.
To meet data residency or legal compliance, besides IP localization, it is also necessary to ensure that data storage/backup is located in Japan and that audit proofs are recorded; IP is only one part of the process.
Factors affecting the low-latency experience include interconnection density with local operators, edge node coverage, dedicated line access (such as Direct Connect/Interconnect), and vendor optimizations for protocols like UDP/QUIC.
1) AWS: Has mature regional and edge networks in Tokyo and surrounding areas, and global optimization of services like Global Accelerator and CloudFront, suitable for scenarios requiring global acceleration and local stability. 2) GCP: The backbone of the home network and peering perform well on certain ISP paths and invest heavily in real-time routing optimization. 3) Azure: Has a local data center in Japan and is integrated with Microsoft's global network, which often gives it an advantage in enterprise application scenarios. 4) Local cloud (Alibaba Cloud, Tencent Cloud): Also has a region in Japan optimized for Asia-Pacific connectivity, with advantages in connectivity and cost with other regions in China/Asia-Pacific.
To obtain the most accurate judgment, real latency, packet loss, and bandwidth tests should be initiated based on typical ISPs and geographic locations of target users, combined with A/B testing provided by vendor acceleration services.
Misconception 1: Just looking at the instance area, you assume the IP must be marked as Japan by all geographic databases. Misconception 2: Believing that "native IP" is the best network experience, ignoring interconnection/peering and routing strategies. Misconception 3: Ignoring the impact of reverse DNS, certificates, and WHOIS information on certain businesses (email, payment, ad targeting).
1) Apply for elastic IPs as needed in the Tokyo area and promptly submit update requests to mainstream geographic databases; 2) Use cloud vendor acceleration or dedicated line services to improve the path to end users; 3) Use arbitrary fallback strategies (multi-region, multi-vendor) for critical services, and implement monitoring and routing switching strategies; 4) If fixed geographic identification is needed, communicate IP block ownership with cloud providers and declare their purpose to third-party geographic databases to accelerate annotation updates.
Clarify required network SLAs, IP ownership explanations, and support processes during the contract and procurement stages to avoid delays in business launch caused by IP geotagging or routing issues.
